The author

S.S. Van Dine is the pen name of Willard Huntington Wright (1888-1939), a refined American art critic. During a long convalescence he devoured hundreds of detective novels and codified their rules; he then created Philo Vance, the aesthete detective. The Benson Murder Case (1926) is his first case. A work in the public domain.
